"Don Quixote" is a classic ballet based on Miguel de Cervantes's homonymous novel. The work was choreographed by Marius Petipa and premiered for the first time in 1869 at the Bolshei Theatre in Moscow, with music by Ludwig Minkus. The ballet focuses on the story of the idealist knight Don Quixote and his faithful squire Sancho Panza.
The plot revolves around the adventures of Don Quixote and Sancho as they seek the virtuous Kitri, an unnamed young woman in love with Basilio, a young barber. History is developed in a colorful and exotic environment, with vibrant Spanish scenes and folkloric dances.
"Don Quixote" stands out for his energy, humor and the brilliant technique of dance sequences, including the famous pas deux of Kitri and Basilio. The work is a classical dance celebration with impressive variations, pas deux and ensemble numbers, making it one of the most beloved pieces of the classic ballet repertoire.
